Brabourne Stadium, also known as the CCI-Brabourne Stadium, is one of the oldest stadiums in India, established in 1937 on reclaimed land. It was named after Lord Brabourne, the Governor of Bombay. This venue is known for its architectural design by Neville de Mello and was once considered as prestigious as England’s MCC.
Brabourne Stadium was once a primary venue in Mumbai, hosting India’s Test matches from 1948 to 1972. However, the rise of Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai led to a decline in the growth of Brabourne Stadium, as the frequency of hosting international matches decreased. However, this stadium still hosted important matches during the Champions Trophy in 2006, and notably, it hosted India’s first-ever T20 International in 2007.
The natural grass pitch at Brabourne Stadium offers batting-friendly conditions, providing consistent pace and bounce. With small boundaries and a lightning-fast outfield, limited-overs matches here are often high-scoring. Floodlights were installed during the stadium's original construction in 1937, and the pitch tends to assist spinners when matches are played under lights.
